Steering head bearings for scooters, motorcycles and mopeds
Steering head bearings, also known as headset, have the task of facilitating the rotation of the fork. The bearings are usually located inside the steering column and provide the connection between the frame and fork.
How steering head bearings work
Steering head bearings usually consist of balls or rollers located between the inner and outer rings. They are designed to absorb and compensate for vertical and horizontal loads as well as torsional forces generated during driving.
Too much play in the steering column
- The first thing you should do is stop immediately, safety first!
- Then you can check whether the steering column nut is tight and tighten it if necessary.
- If the steering column nut is tight, it is possible that the steering head bearings are damaged and you need to replace them with new ones.
- When installing steering head bearings, it is important to apply grease to the bearings.
