This black pull starter is specially designed for Piaggio Ciao models with mono or variator drive and is supplied ready for installation. It is ideal for racing and can withstand the highest loads.
Note: The installation of the pull starter makes the pedal mechanism inaccessible, as the pedal arms rest against the housing of the pull starter. Alternative options such as footrests, a longer pedal axle or a pedal axle extension are therefore required.
Fitting the pull starter
Starter pinion
- Preparation: Clean all mounting surfaces thoroughly.
- Installation: Screw the appropriate counterpart for the pull starter onto the clutch or variator.
- Securing: Apply liquid locking agent, e.g. Loctite, to reliably secure the flange nut.
Cable starter
- Adapter: First screw the housing adapter to the engine finger-tight using the enclosed engine screws.
- Pull starter: Add the draw-wire starter unit to the round housing and fasten with the M5x45mm screws supplied.
- Final assembly: Finally, tighten the motor screws.
Starting procedure
- Before each start, pull the cable slowly a few times to allow the motor to turn without strain.
- Hold the handle firmly and pull until resistance is felt.
- Complete the starting process with a firm pull.
Tip: Gloves improve grip and ensure a secure hold.
Starter motor
Self starters have not been common for very long, today many two-wheelers are started with an electric starter.
For vehicles that can alternatively be started with a kick starter, a failing starter motor may not be the end of the world, but since there are fewer and fewer vehicles with a kick start option, the starter must always work properly.
Starter failure - what to do?
If the engine does not start and the starter motor does not turn, it is not necessarily because the starter is defective. First of all, you should exclude other sources of error:
- Check the battery with a multimeter, it must indicate more than 12 V.
- Check the starter relay: Clack test is not sufficient, it must be tested with a multimeter.
- To test the starter itself, you need to bypass the relay and check if the starter motor turns.
It may be caused by more complex problems. In this case, you should contact a specialist workshop.
