Dummy bearings are used instead of a "real" bearing in order to easily measure and adjust port timing.

The precision fit crankshaft dummy bearing is simply inserted into the crankcase by hand. Unlike a real bearing, the dummy does not have to be laboriously pulled in first, which protects the bearing seats of case and crankshaft as well as the actual bearings.
